Ballintubber Abbey
About
Ballintubber Abbey in County Mayo, is a sacred site with a rich history dating back to 441 AD when St Patrick established a church here. The abbey has withstood centuries of turmoil, standing as a testament to faith and resilience. Despite partial destruction in 1653 by Cromwellian forces, it remains a place of worship, pilgrimage and historical significance.
Now beautifully restored, Ballintubber Abbey serves as both a national monument and a parish church, offering guided tours, retreats and pilgrim walks along Tóchar Phádraig, the ancient path to Croagh Patrick. Visitors can explore its medieval architecture, the tomb of Tiobóid na Long and its peaceful landscaped grounds, rich in Ireland’s Christian heritage.
